Blog #1 (2nd Semester)
Personally, I do not consider myself a feminist. I get a little irritated on the subject matter and am not a big fan of feminists because I believe that the problem of gender equality is for the most part nonexistent in the society we live in today and it was an extreme issue many years ago. Women now have a wide range of opportunities, they are able to vote, hold political roles, serve in the military, receive an elite education, etc. I personally believe that feminists dwell on an issue that has been solved for the most part in our society. However, I do believe that in various other societies and nations, female rights are clearly an issue and they do need to be solved. But in the United States and other countries that do hold these rights, feminists still complain about very irrelevant and minimal issues of gender equality in their society where it should be focused completely on helping women who are not able to enjoy the same freedoms and liberties that they share. I do not agree with feminism, however I do support gender equality and I think that we will be able to reach this stage without the feminist movement.

Chase, I agree with you. I do not consider myself a feminist yet I do believe that men and women are equal and should be treated equal. I think that overall, in our current society, women and men are actually treated pretty equally. I was wondering how accurate the fact that for each dollar a man made a woman only made 77 cents, so I asked my father about his personal experience. He told me that for each of his employees and employers, women made exactly the same as men (depending on the position). Over his career, he has had many women bosses; just as many as men. I then asked my mother about her work experience. She also came to the conclusion that women and men were treated equally and that they were given the same opportunities. Although this does not represent the entire world, I do believe that this shows how women are given more and more opportunities in the world today. For those who think that two examples do not prove anything, I believe it does. Both my parents worked in countries in Europe and then in the United States showing improvement in conditions for women not only in the U.S but in many other countries.
ReplyDeleteChase I agree with you. Rather than striving to bring women up by potentially bringing down men we should instead all do our parts to promote equalism. I completely support traditional feminism as it brought rights and freedoms that men and women should both share, such as suffrage, but I do not agree with feminists of today. Women should most definitely be treated and granted the same rights as men, I just do not appreciate how men are being looked at as the problem. Instead of being open minded to equal rights for women and men alike many of todays ill informed feminists like to label men as misogynistic and closed minded. It becomes a problem when even a simple discussion on feminism has to end with one party being thought of as bigoted. I believe we would all benefit from an equalist society achieved with global participation.
